Housing Info

mcsmapMaster’s College & Seminary is a non-residential campus where our students have avariety of options for living in Toronto.  MCS is located at the corner of Yonge St. and Lawrence Ave. in the Yonge Lawrence Village business district, and is surrounded by these residential neighbourhoods: Bedford Park, Lawrence Park and Lytton Park.

Renting an Apartment

Many Master’s students opt for finding roommates and sharing a one- or two-bedroom apartment.  Rental rates range from $700-$1100 for a one-bedroom to $900-$1500 for a two-bedroom apartment.  Many of our students rent apartments north of the college along the Yonge St. corridor.  Master’s College is located directly on the Yonge St. subway line at the Lawrence stop (view map).

How do I find an apartment?

Every year, MCS campus students are our largest and best resource for housing opportunities as they look for roommates to share apartments and housing facilities.

  • “Housing Contact” discussion conference: When you’re accepted to Master’s, you’ll receive access to the Desire2Learn (D2L) website and the “Housing Contact” discussion conference.  Check this discussion for available apartments and/or roommate requests.  You also can post your own contact information and requests. Many students find this very helpful.
  • Contact Us:  If you contact us we may be able to direct you to other students who are looking for roommates or apartments, too.

Advice for Renters

Choosing a Location…

Availability of Amenities

Wherever you live, you'll need to shop. Look around the neighbourhood you're considering.

  • Is there a bank nearby? Is it your bank or will you have to use an ATM that charges the extra buck fifty?
  • Are you using prescriptions and need to have a pharmacy close by?
  • If you drive, not having your favourite grocery store nearby isn't a problem; but if you don't and the only option within walking distance is the over-priced superstore, you might want to consider looking a couple of blocks closer to the no name, budget friendly grocer. Keep in mind there is a grocery store about three minutes walking distance from the college.
  • Where's the nearest mall? Where's the library? There is a public library across the street from the college.
  • Is there a bus stop outside your apartment or townhouse? If you’re taking TTC, you need to make sure there is a TTC stop within a reasonable distance to your place.

Before Renting…

Viewing apartments
Having scoured the papers, renter's guides or a do-it-yourself drive-by tour, now's the time to check what lies behind the doors.

What should I know about an apartment before I agree to take it?

The only thing worse than getting a bad apartment is getting a bad apartment because you didn’t check it out first, or didn’t ask the right questions.  If you’re viewing a place, don’t be afraid to ask the super showing you any questions that come to mind.  You may want to ask if you have to paint before you move out, and if something looks broken, ask if it will be fixed before you move in.  If at all possible, check out the new place before you agree to it. Familiarize yourself with your rights as a tenant. See www.landlordandtenant.org.

  • How many rooms?
  • Do you plan to share a one bedroom? Is it more economical to obtain a 2 bedroom and have 3 roommates? Is this OK with the landlord?
  • How much is rent?  How much is required up front? (Most places require first and last month.)
  • Is a damage deposit required?
  • How long is the lease? If you plan to go home in May, try to arrange for an eight-month lease if possible.
  • Are you allowed to sub lease?
  • What is included in the lease? Heat/hydro, water, cable, Internet, parking?
  • Are there laundry facilities in the building? What is the cost?

Budgeting…

Don’t go overboard on this one.  If you’re unsure you’ll be able to make those payments—all eight months—it would be better to keep looking.  If you sign a lease, you’re paying that money, so make sure you can.
